SLIME GREEN HALLOWEEN RICE KRISPIE TREATS

If you want to make your Halloween treats look like they've been covered in slime, you'll start by whipping up a basic batch of rice cereal treats.

We have found in recipe testing that covering your rice krispie treats in slime is much easier if you don't mix candy corn and sprinkles. So, unless you're willing to put up with a bit of a hectic dipping process, leave them out--maybe not as cute, but it might be worth your sanity!

To make the slime, you'll combine powdered sugar and milk in a medium bowl and add green food coloring. Once you've got enough green food coloring mixed in so that the mixture looks bright and vivid, you'll add in the yellow food coloring.

Add the yellow food coloring just one drop at a time, stirring after each addition until you reach the perfect neon green slime color!

Dip your cut-up rice krispie treats in the slime, allowing the excess to drip back into the bowl. Lay the rice krispie treats down on a work surface lined with wax paper and place the candy eye decals on the slime. We prefer to use assorted sizes of candy eye decals for this look!

HALLOWEEN MONSTER RICE KRISPIE TREATS

Before you kick off your monster rice krispie treats, you'll first need to decide whether you want to make black rice krispies or orange rice krispies.

If making the black version of these crispy treats, you'll need black food coloring (preferably gel food coloring because it is more pigmented) and cocoa krispie treats. If making the orange version, regular rice krispie cereal and orange food coloring works great!

Hand holding a tube of black food coloring gel over a clear mixing bowl of melted marshmallows and butter with a white spatula.

Then, you'll start by melting the butter and the mini marshmallows in the microwave. Once that is completely melted, you'll add the vanilla and salt and stir until combined.

Next, add orange or black food coloring to the marshmallow mixture. You'll need to add quite a bit because you want the color to be very bright, vivid, and saturated! Now you'll stir in your cereal of choice until it is coated in the melted marshmallow.

Set out a sheet of wax paper and scoop out about a half cup of the marshmallow treats. With greased hands, firmly press them into a ball.

Lay the ball down on your work surface and add a candy eye decal to the center of the marshmallow treat.

  • ½ cup Halloween sprinkles
  • ⅓ cup candy corn
  • 1 (1-ounce) package candy eye sprinkles

Instructions

TO MAKE MONSTER RICE KRISPIE TREATS:

  • For black monster treats, use Cocoa Krispies and black food coloring. For orange monster treats, use Rice Krispies and orange food coloring.
  • Make the rice krispie base by adding the butter and marshmallows to a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at 30-second intervals, stirring after each stint in the microwave until the marshmallows are completely melted.
  • Add the vanilla and salt and stir to combine. Add drops of orange OR black food coloring (not both) and mix until the color is very bright and saturated.
  • Add the cereal and stir until evenly coated in melted marshmallows. Allow to cool slightly, about 5 minutes.
  • Set a sheet of wax or parchment paper on your work surface. Scoop a scant half cup of krispie treats and, with greased hands, firmly press to form into a ball. Place a candy eye decal in the center and set on the wax paper to cool completely.

TO MAKE SLIME-COVERED TREATS:

  • Have ready a greased 9x13" casserole dish. Make the rice krispie base by adding the butter and marshmallows to a large microwave-safe bowl.
  • Microwave at 30-second intervals, stirring after each stint in the microwave until the marshmallows are completely melted. Add the vanilla and salt and stir to combine. Add the rice krispie cereal and stir until evenly coated.
  • Transfer to the prepared casserole dish, and with greased hands, gently press down to smooth over the top. Allow to set, about 30-45 minutes. Cut into 12-16 squares and transfer to a work surface lined with wax or parchment paper.
  • Add the powdered sugar and milk to a medium mixing bowl and whisk to combine. Add drops of green food coloring until the color is very bright and saturated. Add a single drop of yellow, stirring after each addition until it looks like slime.
  • Dip half of the rice krispie treats in the slime, allowing any excess glaze to fall back into the bowl. Decorate with candy eye decals and set back on the wax paper to set completely, about 1 hour.

TO MAKE THE HALLOWEEN SPRINKLE RICE KRISPIE TREATS:

  • Have ready a greased 9x13" casserole dish. Make the rice krispie base by adding the butter and marshmallows to a large microwave-safe bowl.
  • Microwave at 30-second intervals, stirring after each stint in the microwave until the marshmallows are completely melted. Add the vanilla and salt and stir to combine. Add the rice krispie cereal and stir until evenly coated.
  • Add about ⅔'s of the mini marshmallows, ⅔'s of the sprinkles, and ⅔'s of the candy corn and mix to combine. Transfer to the prepared casserole dish, and with greased hands, gently press down to smooth over the top.
  • Sprinkle the remaining marshmallows, candy corn, sprinkles, and sprinkles across the top, and place the candy eyes where you'd like them. Gently press items into place with the palm of your hands.
  • Allow to set, about 30-45 minutes. Cut into 12-16 squares and enjoy!
