As a busy, working mom who cares deeply about the flavor and quality of the food served to both my family and friends, I can assure you this is a simple recipe worth having in your repertoire.

It's perfect for so many occasions. As it turns out, avocado spread and toasted bread are 100% brunch-worthy. Use this spread for avocado toast, on bagels, or serve as an after-school snack for the kids alongside veggies and tortilla chips. It's a recipe you can always count on for delicious results!

WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

You only need five minutes and four ingredients to whip up this delicious avocado spread, making it one of the most efficient recipes.

Avocado spread is seasoned with a simple mix of fresh lemon, garlic, and salt and is a versatile topping for more than just toast!

This recipe is customizable to fit the dish you want. Add fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley, red onion, or bagel seasoning. Want to make it spicy? Throw in a pinch of cayenne pepper and diced jalapeno for a kick! From tacos to sandwiches, to eggs to a dip -- it comes through for you every time!

AVOCADO SPREAD INGREDIENTS

  • Avocados | Perfectly ripe Hass avocados are the best choice for avocado spread. They are known for their soft, creamy texture. The ideal avocado for mashing has no dips or crevices on the skin; it should feel firm but give slightly to your touch.
  • Lemon Juice | Nothing adds a fresh burst of acidity to a dish like a freshly squeezed lemon. You might need more lemon juice if your avocados are on the larger side. If so, feel free to add more lemon, but add just a bit at a time so you don't overpower your spread.
  • Garlic | Fresh garlic is preferred over garlic powder here.
  • Salt | This recipe calls for Kosher salt. If using a standard-sized table salt, cut the quantity of salt down to half a teaspoon.

If you like your food spicy, feel free to add in a pinch of red pepper flakes as well!

HOW TO MAKE AVOCADO SPREAD

1. Prep the Avocado | Lay the avocado on a cutting board and, with your blade parallel to it, cut into the avocado starting at the stem end using a gentle sawing motion. Leaving the knife in its place, carefully turn the avocado until it has made a full circle. Twist and pull the avocado in half, and lay the pitted side on the cutting board with the pit facing the ceiling.

To remove the avocado pit, tap the knife blade into the seed just firmly enough so that it locks into the seed. Twist the knife slightly and carefully pull the seed away from the blade using a dry dish towel.

2. Combine Ingredients | Add the avocado flesh to a mixing bowl with freshly squeezed lemon juice, chopped garlic, and salt. Mash the mixture, stirring intermittently, until nice and smooth, or toss all ingredients in the food processor until the same consistency is reached.

Want to skip mashing the avocado by hand? Use a blender or food processor instead! It'll make your spread extra silky-smooth!

3. Spread | Spoon a large dollop of the avocado spread onto your toast (or whatever might be getting the benefit of avocado that day), and then, with a butter knife or small offset spatula, spread it to the edges.

AVOCADO TOAST SERVING SUGGESTIONS

Avocado toast spread is one of the most versatile recipes out there. It knows no bounds when it comes to every type of cuisine, so here is your chance to get creative with flavors.

  • Eggs | Top your spread with over-easy, chopped, hard-boiled, or scrambled eggs!
  • BLT | Sliced tomato, bacon, baby arugula, and a pinch of salt and pepper would make for a nice and filling open-faced sandwich.
  • Tex-Mex | Like it spicy? Add some roughly chopped pico de gallo and finish your avocado spread toast with a sprinkle of Queso Fresco or Cotija cheese.
  • Greek | For a Greek twist, top your toast with chopped cucumber, red onion, Kalamata olives, a sprinkle of feta cheese, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil!
  • French | Do as the French do. Butter and sliced radishes with a sprinkle of salt are a classic French snack. Swap the butter for avocado spread, add some fresh watercress, and you've got a simply delicious masterpiece!
  • Caprese | Last but not least, who can say no to fresh mozzarella? Add fresh mozzarella or burrata cheese, chopped cherry tomatoes, and basil for a yummy take on Caprese salad!

HOW TO STORE AVOCADO SPREAD

To Store | Plastic wrap is your best friend for keeping your avocado spread nice and green. Place the spread in a container and cover it directly with plastic wrap.

Note: The wrap should be lying on the spread, coming into direct contact with it. Keep your spread stored in the refrigerator this way for up to three days, but you should expect a decline in freshness after day two.

To Freeze | Scoop the avocado spread into a resealable or zip-top freezer bag. Press it into an even layer in the bag to remove as much air as possible. Store in the freezer for up to one month.

A quick note in the name of food science: The pit of the avocado does not keep it from browning. If the flesh of an avocado is exposed to air for an extended period, it will turn brown...pit intact or not.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IS AVOCADO SPREAD THE SAME AS GUACAMOLE?

If you've ever made guacamole, you've created an avocado spread. They both start with an avocado foundation, but the similarities stop there.

While avocado spread contains a simple list of ingredients, guacamole is made with a more complex list of add-ins, such as limes, tomatoes, cilantro, garlic, and onion. Avocado spread can also be whipped up in a food processor, which makes it much smoother and silkier than mashed guacamole.

WHAT IF MY AVOCADOS AREN'T RIPE ENOUGH?

If your avocado needs to ripen quickly, add it to a paper bag with a banana and roll it shut. The bananas release a natural gas that hurries along the ripening process!
