MAKING RANCH DRESSING FROM SCRATCH

Why ranch dressing out of a store-bought bottle at home tastes nothing like the ranch we pour over a restaurant salad is a great mystery. But, what we do know for certain is the only way to enjoy a restaurant-quality ranch dressing in the comforts of our own home is to make it from scratch.

This homemade ranch seasoning was developed to mimic the flavor within the famous Hidden Valley Original Ranch Seasoning packets. Consider this made-from-scratch mix almost identical to the stuff you pour out of those little envelopes (only better)!

Rather than having to hunt down a 1-ounce packet every time you have a hankering for ranch dressing, you can now make a large batch to keep at your beck-and-call!

You'll find this recipe so easy to make, so extremely convenient, so darn delicious, and packed full of ranch flavor, you can't help but come back to it again and again!

RANCH DRESSING MIX INGREDIENTS

First things first, let's talk about that buttermilk powder. Buttermilk is a rich and tangy milk product that is great for adding acidity to recipes. Buttermilk powder does exactly the same thing to Ranch Dressing Mix.

A hand holding up cultured buttermilk powder.

Buttermilk powder is buttermilk that has been dehydrated until it becomes a powder. And yes, in case you didn't know, powdered milk is indeed a thing!

You will likely find it in the baking aisle of your grocery store. Once the seal of buttermilk powder has been removed, it needs to be stored in the refrigerator. This is why homemade ranch dressing mix should also be stored in the refrigerator!

Having to store ranch seasoning in the refrigerator might strike you as strange, but the good news is because this homemade ranch mix is so fresh, you can kiss many of those pesky preservatives goodbye.

All of the different herbs and dried spices that go into ranch dressing mix on a plate.

In addition to the buttermilk powder you will also need the following herbs and spices:

  • Kosher salt
  • black pepper
  • dried dill
  • dried chives
  • dried parsley
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder

HOW TO MAKE RANCH DRESSING MIX

Homemade Ranch Dressing Mix is extremely easy to make and comes together by the means of buttermilk powder and a few yummy dried herbs and spices.

Making it from scratch is as simple as adding the buttermilk powder to a bowl, following that up with the dried spices and herbs, and whisking to combine.

If you are a big texture person, you may want to consider pulling out the food processor for this recipe.

Ranch dressing consists of larger dried herbs like dried chives and parsley. If you'd like these herbs to be less pronounced, you can pulse the mixture in your food processor a few times to create a finer texture.

HOW TO MAKE RANCH DRESSING AND DIP

Once you have your homemade ranch mix combined, you can put it to use right away! Pull it out at your own convenience anytime you would like to grace your table with a delicious ranch dip or dressing.

HOMEMADE RANCH DRESSING

  1. Add 1 cup of mayonnaise, a ½ cup of sour cream, a half cup of milk, and two tablespoons of Ranch Dressing Mix to a medium-sized mixing bowl.
  2. Whisk until the mix is evenly distributed throughout the mayonnaise mixture.
  3. Transferred to the refrigerator to chill for at least 30 minutes to allow the dressing to thicken up a bit.

WHAT IF MY DRESSING IS TOO THICK?

If your homemade ranch dressing is a little thicker than you'd like after the chill time is up, simply add in a couple of tablespoons worth of milk and stir until you reach the desired consistency.

Remember that you can always add more, but things get extra tricky when you can't take away!

WHAT IF MY DRESSING IS TOO THIN?

If your dressing is too thin, you have one of two options: you can either add more mayonnaise or more sour cream. If you love ranch with a good deal of acidity and an extra tangy vibe, add more sour cream.

If you want to thicken it up without affecting flavor too much, more mayonnaise is the way to go. Again, be sure to add extra ingredients in small, 2-tablespoon-sized increments.

HOMEMADE RANCH DIP

  1. Combine 2 cups of sour cream and 2 tablespoons of dry Ranch Dressing Mix.
  2. Mix to combine, cover, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to thicken.

CAN I USE GREEK YOGURT?

If you are hoping to make a healthier rendition of ranch dip, you can absolutely sub in Greek yogurt! However, you should expect the flavor profile to differ. Greek yogurt is a bit sharper in acidity and not quite as smooth and creamy in texture as sour cream.

HOW TO SUB THIS RANCH DRESSING MIX IN RECIPES

This Ranch Dressing Mix is super versatile and can be used for tons of recipes outside of homemade ranch dressing and dip! Use it to season popcorn, mashed potatoes, chicken, and more!

A 1-ounce package of hidden Valley original ranch seasoning has 2 tablespoons of mix inside of it.

Therefore, you will use two tablespoons of this ranch seasoning mix in any recipe that calls for a whole packet of ranch seasoning.

If you are using a recipe that calls for a very specific measurement of dry ranch mix, just use the indicated measurement within the recipe and all will be well!
