Limoncello Margaritas

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Bright, lemony, and just the right amount of sweet, these Limoncello Margaritas are a refreshing Italian spin on a classic margarita. As a former bartender who has made hundreds of margaritas, and someone who hosts on a weekly basis, I've learned that the key to a margarita people genuinely enjoy is balance.

Limoncello brings sweetness and concentrated lemon flavor, while fresh lemon and lime provide the acidity that keeps the cocktail tasting bright and balanced. Blanco tequila allows the limoncello to shine and lands the cocktail firmly in margarita territory. This lemony margarita has been crowd-tested and approved and is officially my new favorite tequila cocktail.

Why This Recipe Works

  • Fresh Citrus | Gives limoncello margaritas a brighter, cleaner acidity than bottled juice, and is key to getting the balance right.
  • Limoncello | Adds concentrated lemon flavor and sweetness to the drink. If you love Italian-inspired twists on a classic margarita, you may also want to try my Italian margarita.
  • Still Tastes Like a Margarita | Tequila, citrus, and sugar keep the cocktail firmly in the margarita lane rather than letting it lean toward spiked lemonade.

Limoncello Margarita Ingredients

  • Tequila | A blanco tequila keeps the flavor of limoncello margaritas crisp, clean, bright, and lemony. You can substitute reposado but its oak and vanilla notes will give the cocktail a warmer, less bright flavor.
  • Limoncello | This Italian liqueur is made by infusing alcohol with lemon peel, then sweetening it with sugar. It adds both sweetness and concentrated lemon flavor to limoncello margaritas.
  • Fresh Lemon + Lime | In recipe testing, we found that using lemon as the only acid caused the cocktail to stray too far from its margarita origins, while lime alone buried too much of the limoncello. Using both citrus fruits together is what allows the limoncello to shine while still tasting like a margarita.
  • Simple Syrup | While limoncello is sweet, it's not quite sweet enough to balance both the lemon and the lime. We found ½ ounce of simple syrup gave us that sweet-tart balance expected from a smooth-sipping margarita.

Rim and Garnish Options

If you enjoy a sugar or salted rim for margaritas, run a lemon or lime wedge around the glass and dip it in kosher salt or granulated sugar. I particularly love a homemade lemon sugar for these margaritas, made by rubbing fresh lemon zest and granulated sugar together.

Garnish with lemon, lime, basil, or mint. They all work beautifully in limoncello margaritas.

How to Make a Limoncello Margarita

Prep the Glass | If adding a salt or sugar rim, wet the rim of a rocks glass with a lime or lemon wedge, then dip the rim in the salt/sugar. Fill the glass to the top with ice. If you need help cutting a lime for rimming a glass, I've got you covered here.

Shake the Ingredients | Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then add the tequila, limoncello, fresh lemon and lime juice, and simple syrup. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.

Pour + Garnish | Strain the margarita over the prepared glass of ice, garnish, and enjoy.

Make It a Pitcher

If you're serving a crowd, this recipe is easy to batch ahead.

For 8 margaritas, combine the following in a pitcher:

  • 12 ounces blanco tequila
  • 8 ounces limoncello
  • 4 ounces simple syrup
  • Juice of 4 large lemons
  • Juice of 4 limes

Stir well and refrigerate until chilled. Stir again before serving, then pour over ice in prepared glasses.

I last served these limoncello margaritas at a party alongside a giant bread board piled with toasted baguette slices and focaccia, with warm marinara, creamy basil pesto, roasted garlic butter, and more. Along with pizza and salad, the margaritas were a hit.

Any time I'm entertaining a crowd, I batch the drinks ahead and create a self-serve beverage station with a pitcher and small bowls of garnishes. It keeps me from playing bartender all night and lets guests help themselves.

Tips for the Best Limoncello Margarita

  • Use fresh citrus. Bottled lemon and lime juice are much sharper and won't give you the same bright, clean flavor.
  • Don't overdo the limoncello. While we love a lemon cocktail (looking at you Spiked Arnold Palmer), too much pushes the drink from margarita territory to sweet lemon cocktail territory.
  • Shake long enough to properly chill and dilute. About 15 seconds chills the margarita and provides just enough dilution to smooth out the tequila and citrus.
  • Adjust the simple syrup to taste. For a drier margarita, start without it and taste before adding. If you prefer a sweeter cocktail, add a little more.

Limoncello Margarita FAQs

Does limoncello replace the triple sec in a margarita?

Yes, in this recipe. Traditional margaritas typically use an orange liqueur like triple sec or Cointreau. Here, limoncello takes its place, replacing the orange flavor with concentrated lemon.

Can I use bottled lemon or lime juice?

I don't recommend it. The flavor of bottled citrus is too sharp and does not have the same bright flavor as fresh squeezed lemons and limes.

Can I make limoncello margaritas ahead of time?

Yes. Limoncello margaritas are excellent for batching ahead. Mix the pitcher and refrigerate it without ice until you're ready to serve. Give it a good stir, then pour over ice so the margaritas don't become diluted.
