How to Use Chicken Taco Seasoning

This customizable seasoning is so versatile. It can be used on all different cuts of chicken, cooked in all kinds of ways. My absolute favorite cut of chicken for chicken tacos is chicken thighs because of the higher fat content, which yields the juiciest, most flavorful chicken tacos (and fajitas).

Whichever cut of meat you prefer, use one batch of taco seasoning per one pound of chicken.

Chicken Taco Seasoning for Chicken Street Tacos

Ground Chicken | Add 2 tablespoons of oil to the pan, add the ground chicken, then sprinkle with chicken taco seasoning, and break meat apart with a spatula. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring often, 8-10 minutes or until chicken is fully cooked through. If desired, add the juice of a lime and stir before serving.

Chicken Thighs | Pat chicken thighs dry, add to bowl, drizzle with a tablespoon of oil (and if you're feeling zest, the juice of a lime), sprinkle over seasoning, and rub to adhere. Then, add 2 tablespoons of oil to the pan and allow to come to temperature over medium heat. Cook chicken for 7-8 minutes on each side until fully cooked through.

Chicken Breasts | Pat the breasts dry with a paper towel, drizzle them with oil, and sprinkle the seasoning over them. (We use the same protocol for our blackened chicken recipe). Rub it in to adhere, and don't worry if all of it doesn't stick. Heat the oil in a large cast-iron skillet (or large fry pan) over medium-high heat. Sear each breast for 2 ½ to 3 minutes on the first side, then flip and sear 1 to 2 minutes more. If your pan is not large enough to house all of the chicken with a little space in between each breast, transfer it to a baking dish. Then, bake for 20 minutes at 350°F (or until the internal temperature registers 165°F). Allow it to rest about 5 minutes before serving or slicing.

  • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon Mexican oregano
