This Refried Bean Dip requires only a few simple ingredients, comes together quickly in just 10 minutes or less, and feeds a crowd. WHAT’S IN REFRIED BEAN DIP?
Refried Bean Dip is a stellar baked party dip that can be served either warm or room temperature. The dip consists mostly of canned refried beans, cream cheese, and shredded cheese. The full list of ingredients is as follows:

Freshly grated cheese works beautifully in this dip, melts easily and makes for a stretchy, gooey masterpiece of a dip. However, if you’re short on time, you can use good quality, pre-packaged shredded cheese.

Sub in two 8-ounce packages of shredded Mexican blend cheese or a Colby and Monterrey Jack combo for the four cups of freshly grated cheese called for in this recipe, if needed.
In many dip recipes, cream cheese serves more of a purpose than just adding a little extra flavor! It also helps to bind ingredients together, in turn, creating a smooth and creamy texture throughout the dip. The cream cheese in this Refried Bean Dip does exactly that.
TIPS FOR CREAM CHEESE!
Note that in order for the cream cheese to properly bind ingredients, it cannot be cold. To soften the cream cheese, you can either leave it out on the counter for a couple of hours, or you can microwave it at 10 to 15-second intervals until soft to the touch, but not melted.
Sour cream also plays an important role in this Refried Bean Dip. The acidity from the sour cream not only brightens things up, but it also thins it the consistency so it is perfect for dipping.
Refried Bean Dip is easily seasoned and packed with flavor thanks to a package of taco seasoning and a generous serving of hot sauce. The hot sauce doesn’t add a great deal of heat to the dip, but if you’d prefer not to use it or don’t want to purchase a bottle solely for this recipe, feel free to leave it out.
For garnish, top off your cheesy baked bean dip with sliced green onions…or don’t. This one’s also completely up to you.
HOW TO MAKE REFRIED BEAN DIP WITH CREAM CHEESE
Refried Bean Dip requires minimal prep and comes together in 10 minutes or less. Actually, the only prep work you have for this recipe (i.e. grating cheese and slicing green onions) is completely optional, so technically, you could potentially be looking at 5 whole minutes of prep. Now, how’s that for easy?
- Blend cream cheese and sour cream.
- Add refried beans, half of the grated cheese, and seasoning.
- Transfer to square baking dish, top with cheese, and bake.
1. MIX CREAM CHEESE AND SOUR CREAM
The first step in making Refried Bean Dip is blending the cream cheese and sour cream together. You can either do this with a wooden spoon or with a handheld mixer. Blending these ingredients first ensures they’ll distribute evenly throughout the beans when added.
2. ADD BEANS, CHEESE, AND TACO SEASONING
The refried beans, grated cheese, taco seasoning, and hot sauce are added to the mixture and it’s all stirred together.
3. BAKE UNTIL MELTY AND BUBBLY
The mixture all gets transferred to an 8″x8″ casserole dish, topped with the remaining cheese, and baked until melty and bubbly in a 350° oven.
As mentioned earlier, the green onion garnish is optional, but note, it does add a nice touch of color to the dish and a great deal of flavor.
FEEDING MORE THAN 12?
You could easily double this recipe and bake it in a 9″X13″ casserole dish. If you plan to do so, add about 5 minutes to the total cook time so your dip will be properly heated through.
STORAGE AND REHEATING TIPS
Your bean dip will stay good for up to four days from the time it is assembled. You can reheat leftover bean dip in the microwave or in the oven. For both methods, the timing will depend on how much dip you are reheating.
Reheat bean dip in the microwave at 45-second intervals in a microwave-safe container until it is to your liking. You can also reheat larger leftover quantities of Refried Bean Dip in the same vessel you baked it in. To do this, preheat your oven to 350° and cover the baking dish with aluminum foil. Then, bake for 10-15 minutes (or until the dip is heated through).
WANT TO MAKE IT IN ADVANCE?
You can easily make Refried Bean Dip in advance. To do so, follow the recipe up to the point of baking in the oven. Then, simply cover the dip with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and place in the refrigerator. This can be done up to 48 hours in advance. When you are ready to bake your bean dip, set it out 30 minutes prior to removing the chill. Then, transfer to the oven and bake as directed. Note, you may need to add 5-8 minutes to the total cook time if your dip goes into the oven chilled.

Refried Bean Dip with Cream Cheese takes only 10 minutes to prepare and is always a hit at the party!
- 2 cups freshly grated Cheddar cheese
- 2 cups freshly grated Monterrey Jack cheese
- 4 ounces (about 1/2 a package) cream cheese, softened
- 2/3 cup sour cream
- 2 (16 ounce) cans refried beans
- 1 (1 ounce) package of taco seasoning
- 1 tablespoon hot sauce
- 2 green onions, thinly sliced (optional)
Preheat the oven to 350° and have ready an 8"x8" square baking dish. Mix together the Cheddar and Monterrey Jack Cheese and set aside.
Add the cream cheese and sour cream to a large bowl and stir to combine with a wooden spoon or handheld mixer on medium speed. Add the refried beans, half of the cheese mixture, taco seasoning, and hot sauce to the bowl, and stir (or mix on low) until well combined.
